![]() ![]() But as much as they adored American blues, they simply weren’t doing any business in the US. They were huge in the UK, scoring a string of big late-’60s hits. Early on, Green was the band’s frontman, and they made fried, fuzzy psychedelic blues. They’d started as a UK blues-rock band in 1967, coming into being when all three non-John Mayall members of John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers - Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, and Peter Green - quit his band and launched one of their own. It was bedlam.īut bedlam had always been the natural resting state for Fleetwood Mac. Everyone was also ingesting vast quantities of cocaine and alcohol. Everyone was writing slick, bitter songs about everyone else. Mick Fleetwood was going through a traumatic divorce of his own. John and Christine McVie, the married couple who’d been in Fleetwood Mac, had just divorced, and they were refusing to speak to each other about anything other than music. Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks, the two Americans who’d joined Fleetwood Mac in 1974 and who’d been together for years before that, had just broken up, and they were constantly fighting bitterly. Infamously, Rumours is an album borne from chaos. In fact, only one song in the entire decades-long history of Fleetwood Mac and of the various solo projects that the band spawned made it to #1. And yet only one of the singles from Rumours made it to #1. Rumours proved that something like that was even possible. Over the next few years, more albums like that would follow: the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, Thriller, Born In The USA. Rumours was something new: a studio album that played like a readymade greatest-hits album. It’s wild to think that “The Chain” and “Gold Dust Woman” and “Second Hand News” and “Songbird” were deep cuts. released four singles from Rumours, and all of them made it into the top 10, something that had never happened before. In its first week, Rumours shipped a mind-boggling 800,000 copies. For an uninterrupted 31-week run, Rumours was the #1 album in the United States. It totally dominated everything else that happened commercially in 1977, and it changed the pop-music calculus. That changed with the release of Rumours, the album that Fleetwood Mac released in February of 1977. And even with the biggest of those albums - something like Goodbye Yellow Brick Road or Songs In The Key Of Life or Hotel California - the labels would only release two or three songs as singles. Bands would release two or three albums in a single year. Up until the late ’70s, artists were expected to crank out new music as quickly as possible. Something like this happened in music, too it just took a little longer. And pretty soon, all the studios were trying to make hits on the level of Jaws. After Jaws, multinational corporations figured out how much money there was to be made in movies. It proved just how lucrative a brilliantly executed spectacle could be. It showed that it was possible to get a whole country excited about a movie at the same time. It revealed the inefficiencies of how the studios had been distributing their movies. Jaws captured the collective imagination on a scale that no other film had ever managed. After just a few months, it had surpassed The Godfather as the highest-grossing film in history. Jaws made more money than anyone thought possible. This strategy, pioneered by the independently made indie film The Trial Of Billy Jack, succeeded wildly. But Jaws opened nationwide on more than 400 screens at once after Universal spent hundreds of thousands on national TV ads. Before Jaws, even the biggest Hollywood movies would start out with hyped-up big-city premieres and slowly spread to the rest of the country. In June of 1975, Jaws came out and changed the way that movies worked. ![]() In The Number Ones, I’m reviewing every single #1 single in the history of the Billboard Hot 100, starting with the chart’s beginning, in 1958, and working my way up into the present. That's not a likely scenario, but it does mean that any point after turn 5, red could have explosive mana. Either way, it's probably still close to 10 +/- lands / other mana. ![]() This can be achieved a bit faster if you also have something like Crypt Ghast (Ghast + Coffers requires 8 lands, inc coffers), or maybe a nykthos, or a deserted temple out. To get 20ish mana, you would need 11 lands (inc coffers) out in this situation. Instant speed is nice though.īlack uses Cabal Coffers, usually with Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth. I usually see Torment follow a wrath, so creatures are usually out, but mana rocks, Sylvan Librarys, and especially cards in hand balance this pretty well.įor funsies, Comet Storm, an oft-acceptable finisher, would cost 32RR for 34 mana in the same situation. In short, Crackle requires equal mana to Torment in this situation if your opponents have 7 non-land permanents or cards in hand. Torment of Hailfire would require X=10, PLUS cards in hand and permanents, or 10BBB + X stuff. I've only ever seen/hear Torment used in a way where X is greater than your life total + stuff.įor a comparison, let's assume an end state game where the highest player has 30 life, and you are trying to kill everyone.Ĭrackle with Power would require X=6, which means 18RR for the kill. If used that way, the opponent choice would likely be a fair hindrance to you. In theory, Torment gives you options to be disruption at lower mana cost - but I'll be honest - I have never seen it played that way, nor ever heard a story of it used that way. Torment scales at 3*X, whereas this scales at 1(2/3) * X. Not that anyone is jumping onboard with lava axes in all their decks, but this is worst-case a lava axe that can hit creatures. I think if you're already at huge mana, Torment pays out better, but Crackle could have a better floor at like, 5-8 mana.ĥ mana for 5 damage is a Lava Axe. 5 damage to one target for 5 mana could be used in a pinch. I think it's okay and I want to like it, but, you definitely need to be in some very big mana before it's scary. Obviously some cards like Teferi's Protection stop either, but, something like Angel's Grace, Comeuppance, Righteous Aura etc. That means they could have some prevention or something. Also, Torment cripples people it doesn't kill when cast for a lot of mana.įinally, Torment is lose life, Crackle is damage. For Torment, you get 3 damage per mana after you exhaust their permanents/cards in hand. Second, the mana ratio isn't the same you're spending (roughly) 3 mana for 5 damage. Is 6 targets a tall order? Not sure, maybe not. To dome someone for 30, you need 6 targets, and 18RR. That being said, it's okay if four color cards don't fit "every color", especially as rarity decreases.I think you'll encounter the same problem you'd have if you drew a bunch of cards and tried to hurt people with Firestorm: You require a lot of targets. A hybrid mana card can only do something that both colors can do. wubr not as hybrid mana) can do anything any one of those colors could do. A card that has each color in its mana cost not as a hybrid (i.e. For a quick few final notes: -Four color cards can be a little bit more powerful than a card with fewer colors in virtue of it being less versatile. I hope that they'll help spark some ideas for y'all. With the printing of the four color commanders (Atraxa being the most memorable), the four color combinations got secondary names that correspond to the archetype that those commanders helped builds: WUBR: Artifice (featuring Breya) UBRG: Chaos (featuring Yidris) BRGW: Aggression (featruing Saska) RGWU: Altruism (featuring Kynaios and Tiro) GWUB: Growth (featuring Atraxa) Obviously, these aren't all encompassing (especially artifice being wubr), but they're absolutely good starting points because they often bring together what those four colors do have in common (For example, you can find cards in red, green, white, and blue that can generally be played to help everyone, but that's not really something you'd find in black.) Regardless of that framework, here are some cards that I've made that hopefully give some ideas. Another thing that might help is the Wizards' archetypes for them. # $Chocolate圜entralManagementUrl = " # ii. # If using CCM to manage Chocolatey, add the following: If that works, code can be added to have your script run itself as administrator.
